This was an absolutely crazy (fun!) project. The objective was to bring three characters from a book, Catsaway, to life, in order to help promote it on the annual Abu Dhabi International Book Fair in 2017.
The characters vary from pompous to utterly neurotic, in the sweetest way possible.
In addition to the main figurines, I sculpted a few generic ‘crowd cats’, built a scale model trash can that serves as their headquarters, and a ramshackle water tower to round off the surroundings for the display.
It was a wild project, completed by myself in only four months. That included sculpting, molding, casting and painting each figurine, as well as building and painting the trash can and water tower. I would have loved to remain part of this project and contribute further to its development, but quite substantial changes in my private life, unfortunately, prevented me from being able to do so. Nevertheless, it was fun while it lasted, and I am very happy, honored and proud to have been a part of it; being able to contribute what I did and breathe flesh (aka clay and paint) to the bones of these 2D characters.
The two big cats stand about 6.5″ (16.5 cm) tall, the rat 5.5″ (14 cm), and the crowd cats are only about 3.5″ (9 cm) from head to paw. The water tower is 18″ (46 cm) tall, and the trash can, if it’s not lying on its side, stands about 10″ (25.5 cm) tall.
